This is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets. As soon as I tried it, I ordered one for my mom. If you use fresh corn in recipes, buy this.
This is easy to use but only strips one row of corn at a time.
That gets rid of the "too hot to handle" problem. This also prevents it from splattering all around when you "zip" it.
We like this one the best. Okay, we bought several "zippers" and did a comparison test.
First of all, you shouldn't be using this on raw corn--process it first to stop the enzyme action. In fact, we're buying a couple more.
I've read the negative reviews, and I just don't think these folks know how to process corn. Second, part of processing it is cooling it down rapidly.
And, this zipper prevents the problem of cutting yourself, which happens with both paring knives and some other zippers (one of which regularly shredded my fingers, which made for some colorful corn).
While the Microplane method is considerably faster, I don't get all the kernels evenly cut. This does a neat, efficient job of removing TWO rows of corn at a time, which means you have to swipe each ear about a dozen times to get all the kernels. It's easier than using a knife, but not perfect--I'm still looking for the perfect tool. That's way too slow for me so I ended up donating this tool. I've been using my beloved Microplane V-slicer (Microplane 47001 Adjustable Slider Food Slicer) and wearing one of those 'Kevlar' gloves to avoid cutting my hand, which works well. This cute smiley faced unit is not it unless you are a patient person with time on your hands. It's a good concept and it does a nice job on the two rows, so some folks will like it fine, but I'm looking for something that does more rows in each pass.
This item is most certainly, without a doubt, an absolute unnecessary, certified, 14 carat piece of crap. If you don't mind doing 2 rows of corn at a time, assuming the tool is perfectly situated, then this tool couldn't even qualify as a potential back scratcher.
